Whether you think about it or not, nonverbal communication is happening in your everyday life. How conscious you are of your encoding and decoding (presence & perception) could be another thing.

Here are a few settings to keep in mind where your body language could be valuable if applied purposefully.

Social

A situation where you might find yourself more commonly. Around new people in public or at an organized gathering where you may just want to come off as friendly or approachable. You never know who you’re going to meet next if you keep an open mind and body language.

Professional

A place where you might find yourself in a 1-on-1 or in a group setting. Maybe you’re going to lead a meeting or take care of conflict. Even in your daily job, you may be working retail, as a barista, or in the corporate world, communication and knowing how to apply body language will help you get through your interactions. Think customer service and teamwork.

Romance

Possibly the most delicate area of your communication. You don’t want to express anything in a negative way and you’ll probably want to make sure you listen well. Being able to express how you feel but also know how your partner feels even when they don’t speak…
